To all Pinterest fans!  Some of you may be aware that I have recently put myself up to the challenge of creating pictorial/color themes on my page https://pinterest.com/janepurcell/.  This is my 2nd official challenge- although I had created several beforehand.  The goal is to follow a color palette and current theme throughout the top 4-5 (if not more) lines of my boards.  If I do not have pictures to match the theme, I try to get at least as close a match with the colorsI have chosen.  The end result should be a cohesive and appealing first impression of my page- sort of like coordinating an outfit and accessories.

Last week’s challenge was based on the recent color trend orange and the height of the season’s pick- melons.  My goal here was to use the colors of the wide range in melons- particularly the pale oranges, greens, and pinks.

This week continues with a seasonal theme- summer’s bounty.  My intentions here are to include the deeper greens of the height of summertime, with the deeper richer colors of the flowers, fruits, and vegetables.  Picture a table overflowing with these things…

Earlier I had dabbled with other colors like the pink/purple/blue hues of early summer sunsets.  After that, I had a pastel page, and then the idea started to form of doing this weekly.  I tested the waters with an aqua/beach theme.

I’ve Been Interviewed by Design and Style Guide

Just recently I subscribed to a newsletter from Design & Style Guide.  When they emailed that they had opened up a social network in their blog I jumped on it.   And here’s why:

Design and Style Guide.net is a network of extremely talented artisans that specialize in handmade home decor.  They present a collective portfolio to Interior Designers and Decorators through their team website www.designstyleguide.net,  and help DSG members with online marketing and promoting the handmade movement in general.

This website is the perfect companion to any quality handmade online store. They don’t sell anything on the website (and therefore charge no sales fees). Instead they link to online store(s) and make it possible for potential buyers to rapidly find quality handmade home decor items by style, material, color, or room. You can even search for sellers locally.

After creating my own pagewith them I had the opportunity to be interviewed.  Here are some excerpts:

What themes do you pursue?

My current focus is floral art and custom silhouettes. The best way I can describe my work is light-hearted and whimsical. I think my appeal is to children and animal- lovers. Although my work tends to be very feminine, I am working on projects that would appeal to more masculine tastes. I mostly identify with those great artists whose use of color dominates their works- Raphael, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Klimt, and John Singer Sargent.

What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?
Funny thing- three times I have had major breakthroughs in my creative blocks, and two of them were due to my dearest pets. The first one was maybe 5- 6 years ago when my parakeet NumNum died. I could not be consoled for a long time, and during that period found some old pencils and began to draw. I drew like I was making up for missed time and I think it helped me through my mourning. The second was when my boyfriend’s father recommended me to a furniture maker for painting a child’s chair for charity. After that I threw myself into the crafting world and have been doing it ever since.

The third was due to the addition into my life of the most beautiful and sweet cat that we rescued due to the death of her owner. Her name is Kitty and you can find many references to her in my websites. Kitty inspired me to draw portraits/silhouettes and narrowed my focus to pets and animals as my primary subjects. And since I am in a very large club of pet- lovers it is a very comfortable niche for me.

Every time I am asked to do a custom pet silhouette my artistic juices get flowing. After talking to people about their loved-ones I feel inside very deeply that I want to capture the essence of that pet. Each time it is a challenge to create something new that will be touching and honor their pet. That is what motivates me most.

How have you handled the marketing side of being an artist?
I’ve donated to silent auctions, made wedding invitations, painted furniture, and been approached by book and magazine editors. I believe this is mostly because I’ve learned quite a bit of online marketing. To sell online as an artist you have to consider how you handle public relations. You have to think about what you are saying and selling. Most of the time it is about making friends and keeping them. Make time to promote them and you’ll eventually find yourself being promoted by them as well.

What do you like about Design Style Guide?
I was delighted to find an email from Design and Style Guide saying that they had a networking site set up. I signed up immediately. For all the social media such as Facebook and Twitter you have to cast a very wide net to capture an audience that will identify with you and your product. I see DSG as a network of like minds who could work together or complement each other. I look forward to watching it grow.
